Contract Rummy

Contract Rummy is a popular version of Gin Rummy, simplified and tailored to suit different skill levels. This game has been around for centuries and is still fun to play today. The rules are easy enough to pick up in under five minutes and are an excellent pick for adults, kids, and family members to enjoy together!

What is Contract Rummy?

Contract Rummy is often played by three to eight number of players, with each deal necessitating a distinct combination of melds called Contract. The game has seven deals in total, and the player who plays off all of the cards first wins the hand as per Contract Rummy rules. After playing seven deals, the object of the game is for the player to win the game with the lowest points.

Contract Rummy Rules

Deck formation

  • Two standard 52-card decks and one Joker are used for three to four players.
  • If there are more than five players, three decks of 52 cards alone with two Jokers used as wild cards.

In each deal, there is a different contract which is a mix of sets and sequences.

How to play Contract Rummy

  • The deck is split and divided to decide who deals first, and each player receives a card. The person who was dealt the lowest card deals first. There are a total of seven rounds of hands in the Contract Rummy game, with different rules for each hand.
  • Each player receives ten cards in the first three rounds and twelve cards in the latter four rounds. The remainder of the deck is then placed in the center of the players; this is known as the stock.
  • Each meld is made up of either a group of three or more cards of the same value (4 4 4) known as a set or a series of four or more cards of the same rank and successive value (4❤ 5❤ 6❤ 7❤) called Sequence. Once merged, a sequence may be expanded by inserting more consecutive cards at each end, with an ace at either end.

More Rules 

  • A group or a set can be expanded by adding more equal rank cards. According to Contract Rummy rules, when a player drops out by discarding all of their cards, the rest of the players get penalty points for all of the cards in their hands.

How Do We Score in Contract Rummy & Win

Scoring in Contract Rummy is different from other variations of the rummy game. At the completion of the round, players will be awarded points based on the number of cards remaining in their hands.

  • Kings, Queens and Jacks are worth 10 points
  • 15 points for Aces and Jokers
  • 10s to 2s are equal to face value.

To keep track of the progress in a game, players can use pen and paper or one of the many smartphone apps available. At the culmination of the seven deals, the player with the fewest points wins the game.
